Role: Producer

Responsibilities: I generated and led a three phase script and story development process. This included script development through close collaboration with the writer and a writer’s room, improvisation workshops with the cast, and community engagement with the East African community. For execution I drew on my line producing past managing schedule, budget and shaping the crew from development through production, post to completion.

What would you choose - house or home?

Australia is a country of immigrants. This tv pilot is a slice of life story about the struggle to survive in a new country while still having to support family back home.  A story too common around the globe. Through dramatic and comedic moments this project zooms in on the contrast between those who support family overseas and those who do not and their different approaches to life.

This pilot was a co-creation between Malek Domkoc, Clement Rukundo, Rikki Clarke, Liam Coleman and myself. Starting as a short film script it was developed through a writer’s room, then improvisation workshop with the cast and community engagement. We developed this into a proof of concept for the SBS Digital Originals format. This being the first episode of six from our series bible.

Malek, a South Sudanese-Australian, and I met with a community of South Sudanese, Sudanese and East African community to share Malek’s script but more importantly deeply listen to their immigration experience

This pilot was shot in three days and worked to crew and cast towards the SBS diversity guidelines. Through co-creation principles and deep collaboration we focused on authenticity of the community portrayed, while also recognising that every individual has their own immigrant experience.
